ARAU, May 26 (Bernama) -- Siti Fatimah Ismail gave the Kedah SUKMA contingent its first gold medal after winning the women's Mountain bike (Cross Country) race in the SUKMA hosted by Perlis, here today.
The 21-year-old from Alor Star, clocked one hour 12 minutes and 26 seconds to complete the 19.9km race held in Pauh Putra, Ulu Pauh, near here to beat her team mate Siti Nur Adibah Akma Mohd Fuad (1'12.56s) while Sarawak's Noor Fadilah Saiedin took the bronze medal with a time of 1'14.31s.
"Though Kedah were not the favourites after Mardiana Mohd Radzi injured herself in the BMX race yesterday, I and Siti Nur just wanted to give our best shot and we are pleased with the result after a 1-2 finish," said Siti Fatimah who will also be competing in the road race.
In the men's event, Terengganu's Mohd Zulhafiz Saipuddin dominated the race from start to finish, clocking one hour 20 minutes 11 seconds to complete the 27.86km distance ahead of Alvin Leong Vui Chung (Sabah) and Garry Tay Yuan Swee (Sarawak) who clocked 1'23:41s and 1'25:22s respectively.
"After failing to win the gold in the 2012 Pahang SUKMA, I had targetted the gold and worked very hard in training. My strategy was to remain in the leading pack and break away at the finishing line.....
