Perlis Sukma Gets Underway Today

KANGAR, May 24 (Bernama) -- The 17th Malaysian Games (Sukma) gets underway today with heats and preliminary rounds before the official opening on Monday.

The campaign started with karate-do and kanu with Penang's Thompson Hoe firing the first salvo by clinching the first goal medal in men's individual at the karate venue at Perlis Matriculation College, Arau.

About 6,000 athletes from all states are vying for 396 medals in 24 sports under the watchful eyes of the Youth and Sports Ministry, particularly the National Sports Council (NSC) and coaches who are scouting for upcoming athletes to represent Malaysia.

Brunei are also taking part in the 117 Sukma as a guest contingent.

Meanwhile, the biennial event, also involves over 1,000 athletes from the NSC Junior Branch, who are representing their states.....
