ARAU, May 24 (Bernama) -- The Penang contingent have grabbed the first gold medal of the 17th Malaysia Games (Sukma) through their karate exponent, Thomson Hoe in the men's individual kata event at the Perlis Matriculation College here today.

Hoe, 21, from Georgetown, said he was elated winning the first gold medal for the state and for himself as he only managed to collect a bronze medal at the 2012 edition in Pahang.

"I owe my victory to my coach for his guidance. I really focused on winning the gold this time," he said.

Hoe collected five full points to defeat Chun Jet San of Johor while Sabah's Farlin Veroney M. Frederick and Howart Tan Jia Jie of Perlis shared the bronze.

In the women's individual kata event, Celine Lee Xin Yi delivered Penang's second gold medal when she beat Lim Sin Yi of Johor also by a 5-0 score.....
