Westwood Sizzles In Lightning Disrupted Malaysian Open First Round

Last update: 17/04/2014

KUALA LUMPUR, April 17 (Bernama) -- Former world number one, Lee Westwood escaped the weather disrupted play to move into a one-shot club house lead in the 2014 Maybank Malaysian Open today.

Play was abandoned at 4.57pm due to lightning but although play resumed at 5.15pm, not all the players managed to complete their rounds.

Westwood, who finished in seventh place at last week's US Masters in Augusta, started off brilliantly in the US$2.75 million (about RM8.9 million) championship held at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club in Bukit Kiara.

"I didn't make the best of starts with a bogey at the par-five 10th hole, the first hole of the day, but fortunately that didn't set the tone for the day. I hit really well and hit out close a lot.

"I had to be patient because I was hitting good putts and they weren't going in...the course was soft so it's playing its longest and the green are firm," said Westwood.....
