World Junior Badminton Championship: Quarter-finals Target Realistic

Last update: 12/04/2014

ALOR SETAR, April 12 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has set a target of qualifying for the quarter-finals in the individual events at the 2014 World Junior Badminton Championship which will be held at the Sultan Abdul Halim Stadium here from April 13-18.

Twenty junior badminton players will be competing in five categories, namely men's singles (four), women's singles (four), men's doubles (three pairs) women's doubles (three pairs) and mixed doubles (four pairs).

The women's junior singles team coach Rony Agustinus said for the women's singles player lineup, a quarter final target was realistic based on the performance and capability of his charges. However, he said it would depend on the draw to see who they would be facing when the competition starts tomorrow. "We hope it will be in our favour so that we can avoid tough opponents such as from China, Japan and Thailand.

"But I hope the players will give their best performance and show a high fighting spirit if they have to meet the players from these countries first," he told Bernama here, today.

The women's junior singles line up has been reduced to three players from four after S. Kisona was forced to withdraw after she was injured in the quarter-final team event against China on Wednesday.....
