PASIR GUDANG, March 27 (Bernama) -- National singles player Chong Wei Feng booked a spot in the quarterfinals of the Yonex-Sunrise Malaysian Open Grand Prix Gold at the Pasir Gudang Indoor Stadium here after beating Singapore's Derek Wong Zi Liang 21-16, 13-21, 21-19.
Wei Feng, the number two seed in the tournament, had initially looked like cruising his way into the quarterfinals after winning the first set 21-16 but Derek came back strongly in the second set to easily beat Wei Feng 21-13.
However, Wei Feng pulled out all the punches in his bag to take the third set 21-19 in a closely fought affair.
"He played well. I never expected him to play that well as I have not seen him play like that for some time," said Wei Feng who had in the morning beaten China's Huang Yuxiang 21-19, 21-18 in the second round.
Wei Feng will now meet India's R. M. V. Gurusaidutt while another Malaysian, Soo Teck Zhi also made it to the quarterfinals after beating giant-killer Mohamad Arif Abdul Latif 21-12, 21-15 in an all Malaysian affair.....
