JOHOR BAHARU, March 24 (Bernama) -- The absence of world number one Datuk Lee Chong Wei will certainly not rob the Yonex-Sunrise Malaysia Grand Prix Gold badminton championships at the Pasir Gudang Indoor Stadium which starts tomorrow as another Chong Wei will be in action.
Lee Chong Wei's understudy, Chong Wei Feng, ranked world number 14, will spearhead the country's challenge in the USD120,000 (RM384,000) GP Gold event that will feature players from Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, United States, Hong Kong and India.
Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) administration manager Ahmad Mohd Idris who is also the tournament secretariat said since Chong Wei would be concentrating on major championships, Wei Feng, 27, has been tasked with shouldering the responsibility to lead the local challenge.
"293 players from 16 countries, including Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, United States, Hong Kong and India have confirmed their participation for the tournament held in Pasir Gudang for the first time," he told reporters here Monday.
Apart from Wei Feng, players like Alamsyah Yunus and Simon Santoso from Indonesia and Thailand's Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk will be the one to watch, he said.....
