Former Weighlifting Champ Turns Powerlifting Coach To Share His Passion With Paralympic Athletes

NAYPYITAW, Jan 14 (Bernama) -- Kuala Lumpur 98 Commonwealth Games gold medallist and former national weightlifting champion, Muhammad Hidayat Hamidon has decided to share his knowledge and experience with Paralympic athletes.

Muhammad Hidayat, 38, who has since retired from competitive weightlifting, is now one of the national coaches for the powerlifting squad.

"I never knew I would be involved in powerlifting even though I used to train in the same gymnasium with them. It has been one year since I started as a powerlifting coach," Hidayat told Bernama, here Tuesday.

He admitted facing difficulties in training powerlifters at the start but has since adopted to the training regime and lifestyle of Paralympic athletes.

"It took me about three months to acquire the technical aspects of the sport as powerlifting is different from weightlifting. I am grateful to my former coach and also former national powerlifting chief coach, William Yeoh. He showed the ropes of the sport," he said.....
