KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 7 (Bernama) -- The national sailing squad will be competing in the Oceanbridge Sail Auckland championship in New Zealand as part of their early preparation for the Asian Games which will be held in Incheon, South Korea in October.
Malaysian Yachting Association (MYA) general manager Mohd Afendy Abdullah said the championship will be held from Feb 1 to 5.
"They will gain early exposure in competing at a very high level as they will up against the world's top sailors, especially from New Zealand. We are not setting any medal targets as the competition will be very tough but are for hoping for the best," he told Bernama today.
Among those who will be in action in Auckland are Myanmar SEA Games gold medallist Khairulnizam Mohd Afendy (Laser Standard), Myanmar SEA Games bronze medallists Khairul Nisa Mohd Afendy and Nur Ashikin Mohd Sayed (Women's International 470 Wanita) and the pair of Ku Anas Ku Zamil and Mohammad Hafizudin Mazlan (Men's International 470).
For the record, Malaysia won two silver medals and a bronze at the last Asian Games in Guangzhou, China in 2010. The silver were contributed by Khairunnisa Mohd Affendy and Norashikin Sayed (Women's Double Handed Dinghy 420) and Ahmad Latif Khan and Ali Sabri Khan (Men's Dinghy Optimist) while the bronze by Ku Zamil Ku Anas and Mohamad Hafizuddin Mazelan (Men's Double Handed Dinghy 420).....
