REMBAU, March 13 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today called on all Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties in Negeri Sembilan to adopt the principle of 'give and take' in the selection of candidates to be fielded in the 14th general election (GE14), which will be finalised by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak soon.
He said this was to ensure victory for BN so that the party would retain power in the state.
"The prime minister has a better plan. So, it is hoped that all BN component parties would allow a little give and take in the selection of candidates because what's important is for us to win the seats."
"If we feel that the candidate is unsuitable, but we want to win the seat, then we should find a winnable candidate to run for the seat so that we will be able to win more state and parliamentary seats...that's the best formula in Negeri Sembilan," he said at the Leader-Meets-People event in Taman Satria, Paroi, here today.
Also present were Menteri Besar and State BN chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan; Youth and Sports Minister who is also Rembau Member of Parliament Khairy Jamaluddin; as well as state executive councillors and BN component party leaders.
Elaborating, Ahmad Zahid, who is also UMNO vice-president assuming the duties of deputy president, said the BN party leadership could still compromise with the grass roots in the selection of candidates for the GE14, but it was also hoped that the grass root members and leaders would also compromise with the decision made by the party leadership.
"There is no problem that cannot be solved. I don´t see any serious problem in Negeri Sembilan and I hope with Datuk Seri Najib´s formula and with our hard work, bigger victory will come to us, " he said.
Ahmad Zahid said there were three key elements to be considered in the selection of BN candidates for the GE14, namely a candidate who is capable of bringing changes and development, capable of winning and well-liked by voters.
He said he was confident that the Negeri Sembilan BN led by Mohamad would be able to win two-thirds majority in the GE14.
In fact, he said he was also very confident that Khairy would also retain his Rembau parliamentary seat, and also the four state seats in the parliamentary constituency, with bigger majority.
Beside, the deputy prime minister was also optimistic that the Negeri Sembilan BN would be able to wrest back the Telok Kemang and Seremban parliamentary seats, which are currently held by PKR and DAP.
In the 13th general election, Khairy won the Rembau parliamentary seat with 18,357-vote majority in a three-cornered fight against Radzali A. Ghani (PKR) and Abdul Aziz Hassan (Independent).
