KOTA KINABALU, Nov 29 (Bernama) -- The Karanaan and Melalap state seats are the first two official results of the 17th Sabah State Election to be announced by the Election Commission (EC).
EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said the commission is still awaiting the results for the remaining 71 seats, which will be announced by the respective returning officers across Sabah.
“The EC wishes to inform that the vote-tallying process is taking slightly longer due to multi-cornered contests, as well as terrain and logistical challenges in several interior areas in transporting ballot boxes to the official vote-tallying centres.
“The EC assures that the official vote-tallying process is being conducted transparently and efficiently and in accordance with the law. Further results will be announced from time to time,” he said in a statement today.
The Sabah State Legislative Assembly has 73 seats, and a simple majority of 37 seats is required to form the state government.
The Karanaan seat was won by Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun of Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) with a majority of 5,361 votes, after securing 7,081 votes in a seven-cornered contest.
Meanwhile, Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Datuk Jamawi Ja’afar captured the Melalap seat with a 525-vote majority, polling 5,064 votes and defeating seven other candidates.
