SHAH ALAM, Nov 14 (Bernama) -- The Selangor government is allocating RM54.34 million to enhance flood mitigation projects, involving the addition of 17 new projects, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
He said that among the river basins involved are Sungai Klang (RM16.92 million), Sungai Langat (RM16.51 million), Sungai Selangor (RM5.74 million), Sungai Buloh (RM1 million), as well as Sungai Bernam and Kapar Besar (RM2.8 million).
"Greater emphasis is given to the Sungai Klang and Sungai Langat river basins, which are facing rapid development, leading to an increased surface water flow. This has resulted in frequent and severe flash floods and monsoon floods.
"The implementation of these flood mitigation projects will be strengthened through integrated and strategic collaboration with the Federal Government, so that the solutions designed are truly holistic, sustainable and high impact in controlling and reducing the risk of flood disasters in Selangor,” he said while tabling Selangor's Budget 2026 at the Selangor State Assembly here today.
Amirudin also announced an allocation of RM11.51 million to the Selangor Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS), besides an additional 10 new projects for carrying out technical expertise services that can ensure every river basin is managed meticulously, integratedly and effectively.
He said that holistic river basin management is the key to the sustainability of Selangor's water sources, with its development having to be implemented in an integrated manner as the main strategy in preserving, managing and developing water and land resources across all sectors.
"This approach is designed to maximise socio-economic benefits, ensure a resilient and sustainable water-source management, as well as preserving and restoring natural ecosystems,” he said.
In addition, Amirudin said Selangor JPS has also been allocated RM12.89 million, with an additional 10 new projects to strengthen the state's drainage system capacity.
He said this is to pay attention to increasing the existing drainage capacity in high-risk areas, as well as improving internal drainage systems to handle heavy rainfall and high water flow.
Regarding development in coastal areas, the Selangor Menteri Besar announced a RM4 million allocation to implement 11 new projects, encompassing work to improve and strengthen coastal embankments in the affected areas.
He added that coastal area development is a crucial aspect in ensuring the well-being of the residents and the sustainability of the coastal ecosystem.
"The phenomenon of climate change and of high tides, which are occurring more frequently, demand more proactive and effective measures to strengthen the state's protective barriers, especially in Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor and Kuala Langat,” he said.
