KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 12 (Bernama) -- U Mobile Sdn Bhd has upgraded 2,976 sites to 5G coverage, providing 58.2 per cent 5G coverage in populated areas as of Oct 31 this year, said the Communications Ministry.
Additionally, 11 buildings have been equipped with 5G infrastructure. These sites will be operational in stages according to the implementation schedule, reflecting an active rollout phase in the 5G national network expansion, the ministry said in a written reply on the Parliament website today.
The ministry was responding to a question from Yusuf Abd Wahab (GPS–Tanjong Manis), who asked about the latest developments in the 5G network nationwide following U Mobile’s appointment in early 2025, and the current status of the company’s major shareholders.
The ministry also said that the dual 5G network approach will promote greater competition in the telecommunications landscape, driving innovation and improving service quality.
“With the establishment of the second 5G network developed by U Mobile, Malaysia will be able to diversify service options, ensuring that consumers have access to more competitive prices and better coverage,” the ministry added.
It stressed that this move is crucial to bridging the digital divide and driving economic growth through improved digital infrastructure and wider coverage, particularly in underserved rural areas.
