KOTA BHARU, Nov 21 -- Twelve-year-old Haris Mustafa Abdul Karim did not let autism get in the way of his studies - he excelled in the recent Pentaksiran Alternatif Sekolah Rendah (PASR) examination for Year Six special needs students.

Haris Mustafa is one of three Year Six students at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Datu’ Hashim in Pengkalan Chepa here who received top results in seven subjects comprising Bahasa Melayu (Malay language), Cookery, Mathematics, English, Science, Interpersonal skills and Intra-personal skills.

The youngster who is the second of three children and aspires to become a chef, told Bernama when met at the school today, that autism "is not an obstacle to my ability to do well in my studies".

His father Abdul Karim Mohd Zain, 42, said that Haris Mustafa could not have done it without the support and encouragement from the school headmistress and special education teachers in particular.

"I am truly grateful to the school," said Abdul Karim, adding that he had seen a great improvement in his son's abilities, including his English language speaking skills and his independence.

Headmistress Hamidah Che Abdul Hamid said although special needs students did not take part in mainstream education, they were proactive during lessons and had the ability to undertake practical exercises and  project work well.
