KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 -- Flying the Jalur Gemilang national flag is among the best examples of independence, says Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Senator P Waytha Moorthy.
He said the pluralistic society of Malaysia would remain a model country to the world in terms of managing racial unity.
“In line with this year's Independence Day and Malaysia Day theme of 'Sayangi Malaysiaku: Malaysia Bersih’, all of us should take on the responsibility of strengthening our sense of identity as a people who love harmony.
"The spirit of love for the nation must take precedence over all other agenda and especially those that can divide the people of our country," he said in a statement today.
He described unity in the country as unique and dynamic, allowing people of all races and ethnicities to live in a peaceful environment based on mutual understanding, appreciation of the Federal Constitution and the Rukun Negara as the core of culture and lifestyle.
He stressed that the emergence of isolated issues after 62 years of Malaysia's independence was common to a nation of many races and religions and therefore, elements of unity needed to be pursued and carried out collectively and in a planned manner.
