KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- National women’s walker, Elena Goh Ling Yin has confirmed a slot to the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines after winning the gold medal in the women’s 10,000-metre walk event at the Malaysia Athletics Federation (MAF) Athletics Championship here this morning.
Elena, who was the gold medal winner for the 2017 edition in Kuala Lumpur, beat the athletes from Pahang, Johor and Sarawak with a time of 53 minutes 09.44 seconds.
Representing ATM, Elena beat Koong Jia Lin of Pahang who won the silver medal (56:25.50s) and Pua Ling En of Johor who won the bronze (58:19.35s) in the competition at National Sports Council’s Mini Stadium, here today.
Based on the latest ranking in South East Asia, Elena had emerged as the fastest participant followed by Elizabeth Capioso of the Philippines with one hour 04 minutes and 27 seconds.
Athletics’ chief coach, Mohd Manshahar Abdul Jalil also confirmed that Elena was the latest athlete to have qualified for the biggest biennial festival in South East Asia in November.
For the record, Elena ended the 18-year gold medal drought in the 2017 edition by recording a time of 52:21.50s to beat silver medal winner Thi Bich Ha of Vietnam (52:27.78s) and bronze medal winner T. Assawawongcharoen of Thailand (53:17.10s).
