JOHOR BAHRU, July 14 (Bernama) -- Marine police (PPM) seized 600 cartons of white cigarettes believed to have been smuggled into the country via Tanjung Kelisa, Bandar Penawar, near Kota Tinggi, on Saturday.
Its Region 2 commander ACP Paul Khiu Khon Chiang said the contraband cigarettes valued at RM60,480 (including tax) and smuggled from the neighbouring country, were detected at a location believed to be used by the syndicate.
“The location was previously revealed via closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera at the end of last year and was detected to be active again, and during the 5.30 am raid, the team had to climb a 10-feet high zinc fence which was used as the barrier,” he said in a statement here today.
He also believed the same syndicate carried out its activities at the location.
Consistent action would be carried out by PPM to combat the smuggling activities via the country’s waters, he said.
