SRINAGAR (Indian-controlled Kashmir), June 11 (Bernama) -- Two militants were killed in a fierce gunfight with government forces Tuesday in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, Xinhua news agency reported, quoting the police.

The gunfight broke out at village Awneera-Zainapora of Shopian district, about 75 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Early today, a gunfight triggered here between militants and joint contingents of police and army," a senior police official posted in Shopian told Xinhua. "In the exchange of fire, two militants were killed."

A police spokesman said that the bodies have been recovered from the spot.

"We are trying to ascertain their identity and group affiliation," the spokesman said.

Indian army and police have not suffered any damage in the gunfight.

According to police officials, an operation to track down militants in the area was launched on specific intelligence information suggesting the presence of militants.

"Though militants tried to break the cordon, however their efforts couldn't succeed," the police official said.

Authorities have suspended mobile internet service in the district and adjoining areas in wake of the gunfight.
