KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 5 (Bernama) -- A total of 867 Government-owned Internet Centres have been in operation since 2007, with annual maintenance and operating costs of approximately RM300,000 per location.
Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Eddin Syazlee Shith said the centres were established across the country to narrow the digital divide between the urban and rural communities.
"At present, the government does not intend to increase the number of Internet Centres as the focus is on the development of communications infrastructure comprising fixed and mobile broadband coverage that can provide more comprehensive communications services to the locals," he said during the question and answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today.
He was responding to a question from Lim Lip Eng (PH-Kepong) who wanted to know the number of 1Malaysia Internet Centre in operation, as well as their yearly operating costs and whether the programme would be continued.
Meanwhile, Eddin Syazlee said the Government was also open to the proposal of establishing Internet centres for hosting Electronic Sports activities for the younger generation in the future.
