KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 (Bernama) – A society stuck in its comfort zone will find it difficult to adapt to the coming technological change, said Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) vice chancellor, Prof Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib, at the closing ceremony of the 5th World Engineering, Science and Technology Congress (ESTCON 2018) today.
“With the relentless march of technology and changes in lifestyle, if we don’t watch it, we will be left behind. This means efforts must be made to expose the public to the changes that are coming,” he added.
Society has embraced technology for personal use through gadgets and smartphones, he said, but with regards to Industry 4.0, the reality is that its application is still low.
The tentativeness could be due to the high cost involved, but industry players need to be educated on the function of technology and its benefits, he said.
Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Deputy Minister, Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis, who officiated the closing ceremony also gave out awards to ten speakers for the Best ESTCON 2018 Working Paper.
