Last update: 14/03/2018

BUKIT MERTAJAM, March 14 (Bernama) -- Haliza Industries Sdn Bhd has made inroads into Bahrain with its first shipment of five containers of Bingo Bite's flavoured corn snacks worth RM2.5 million (US$1=RM3.90).

Its Managing Director, Datin Haliza Hussein said the export was clinched during the Gulfood Trade Fair 2018 in Dubai from Feb 18 to 22.

She said the company's participation was facilitated by the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority's (FAMA) International Division, which brought five local food manufactures to showcase their products at its booth at Gulfood 2018.

"Haliza Industries is one of Penang's companies participating under the state's Seri Pinang household brand for domestic and international markets.

"We are very fortunate to have been given the support and assistance by the government and its agencies in Penang.

"Small and medium enterprise (SME) products can get a lot of orders if we were to meet the quality and standards required internationally," she told reporters after the flagging off Haliza Industries' first consignment to Bahrain here today.

The event was officiated by Penang Bumiputera Cooperative and Entrepreneur Development Focus Group Committee Chairman Datuk Dr. Muhamad Farid Saad.

Recounting Haliza Industries' early days, Haliza said she started the business with a capital of RM370,000 in 2008 and last year the company generated RM1.9 million from overseas sales.

"With purchasing orders coming from China, Brunei, Singapore and Saudi Arabia besides Bahrain, the company expects its export revenue to reach US$10 million this year.

"We have been exporting to China since 2014 and it is our biggest export market. The demand has risen to seven containers.

"We opened a warehouse in Shanghai last December to cater to the growing demand and our products are also sold in 700 fruit supermarkets in China," she said.

Haliza said the company planned to penetrate other countries, including Canada and Australia.

Meanwhile, FAMA International Division Senior Director Datuk Nazipah Jamaludin hopes more entrepreneurs would emulate Haliza Industries in making international forays.

She said Malaysia exported food products worth RM37 billion as at November 2017.
