KUALA LUMPUR, March 7 (Bernama) -- If you are travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Penang or vice versa, give yourself a break midway by spending a night in Ipoh, which is also a food haven.
That's what this writer and two other colleagues Deputy Editor in Chief Bernama Economic Service (BES) Nor Faridah Rashid and Bernama Multimedia Desk Editor Hafizah Kamaruddin did.
We spent overnight at Kintariverfront Hotel & Suites last Sunday after attending a wedding of BES reporter Nurul Hanis Izmir in Kepala Batas, Seberang Perai.
If not for Hafizah, who hails from Ipoh, we wouldn't have found #LabuSayongSignatureRestaurant, a fine dining restaurant, which serves authentic traditional Perak dishes.
Located near Bulatan Amanjaya in Meru Raya, the restaurant, based on the 'Rumah Kutai' or pre-1900 traditional Perak Malay house concept, is an initiative of the Perak State Development Corporation (PKNP) to promote the state´s cuisine and tourism.
It was nearly 6pm when we stopped by this exquisite restaurant for tea. You will be mesmerised by the classic beauty of the Perak traditional house, Rumah Kutai.
One can easily find the Rumah Kutai (meaning "old") with rare traditional long roof with the gable end in Kuala Kangsar.
But wait till you enter the restaurant. The interior deco took our breath away, and true to its name, the Labu Sayong Signature Restaurant, was perfect for a taste of Perak over tea.
We couldn't help capturing the moments as we sat at the dining table for 'Sepetang D Sayong' tea, comprising Cucur Udang Kak Ros, Goreng Pisang Lenga Hitam, Cucur Badak Serunding Kelapa Udang Kering, Kuih Muih Melayu, Kopi Kampung/Teh Tarik. All these for RM16.90 nett per person.
Our eyes wandered around the house as we waited for our food to be served.The wall and floors of Rumah Kutai are made entirely of bamboo matting, which allow natural ventilation and to reduce glare.
The main section of the classic Perak Malay house has several posts and the windows are very small. The main materials used are wood and bamboo, with the dark interior having a cooling effect on the house.
Several pieces of the tudung saji which is used to cover food, adorn the walls of the house, with white lace curtains chosen for window furnishing, which are typical of a traditional kampung house, to allow daylight to enter.
Call it a signature serving, the afternoon tea was a delight, with a variety of traditional kuih being placed in a bird cage. We didn't leave any food to waste as the cucur udang, goreng pisang, cucur badak, bubur pulut hitam, bubur kacang, laksa (additional) and teh tarik were simply superb!
Among the authentic local dishes that will delight the patrons' palate include the Labu Sayong Signature Restaurant, include Ikan Purba Labu Sayong, Tenggiri Kepai Udang Kertas Rusuk Kambing Tongkat Ali and Ikan Tongkol Pindang Daun Senair.
The menu also includes Pajeri Nenas Kampung Selabak, Gulai Lemak Pisang Muda-Mudi, Kari Ayam Limau Purut Sungkai, Itik Darat Desa Trong, Sup Ketam Labu Sayong, Telur Dadar Ikan Tenggir, Asam Pedas Ikan Tenggiri Bunga Kantan and Laksa Pulau Pangkor.
The restaurant, which was officially opened on Aug 21, last year, opens daily from 11am to 10pm on Monday to Thursday and from 11am to 11pm from Friday to Sunday.
