17 Individuals Detained In New Year Special Operations In SPU

KEPALA BATAS, Jan 1 (Bernama) -- Police arrested 17 individuals including three women for various criminal and drug offences in the New Year 2018 special operations carried out in the Seberang Perai Utara (SPU) district.

SPU district police chief ACP Noorzainy Mohd Noor said in the 7 pm to 3 am operations, police detained 17 individuals, aged 25 to 40, and one of them was involved in cable theft activities.

"When he was being arrested in Sungai Dua, Butterworth, police also seized stolen items including white and copper wires and equipment for stealing cables.

"The investigation also found that the suspect is also wanted for cable theft cases in SPU and Gurun district, and he was remanded for further investigation," he said here today.

He said the other 16 who were detained, including three women, were involved in drug abuse while some of them had turned a house in Sungai Pinang, Butterworth as a haven for drug-related parties.

Noorzainy said during the raid on the house, police detained four men and three women who had turned the rented house into a drugs haven, where syabu and heroin were also seized.

He said a total of 431 people and 260 vehicles were inspected during the operations and 20 summonses were issued for various traffic offences.

"The operations that involved 248 police officers and policemen, were aimed at curbing criminal activities and illegal racing in conjunction with the New Year celebration around the SPU district," he said.

In an unrelated incident, Noorzainy said a man was found drowned in a canal in Permatang Bogak, here this morning.

He said the victim, identified as Nasrul Anwar Zaki, 22, from Kampung Alor Merah, Sungai Dua, believed to have been travelling from Permatang Tiga to Permatang Bogak when he failed to control his Yamaha 125Z motorcycle before it skidded and hit a power pole and fell into the 2.5 metre-deep canal.

He called on the public who had information related to the accident to come forward to assist the investigation.
