Govt Urged To Build Special Settlement For Rohingya Refugees

ISKANDAR PUTERI, March 8 (Bernama) -- The Kempas state assemblyman has suggested the federal government set up a special settlement for the Rohingya refugees in the country to check negative elements involving the ethnic group.

Datuk Tengku Putra Haron Aminurrashid Jumat said the Rohingya refugees were not placed in a special settlement unlike the Vietnamese immigrants in Pulau Bidong, Terengganu, a long time ago.

"To date, there are about 174,000 Rohingya people in the country, including 10,000 in Johor.

"They live in residential areas of the locals, such as the Malay villages. They are refugees in Malaysia but are free to move about anywhere and there are some who violate the law," he said when met by reporters after the Johor State Assembly sitting in Kota Iskandar here today.

Tengku Putra Haron Aminurrashid said there were several criminal cases reported involving the Rohingya refugees, including drug trafficking and murder, adding he had even seen a Rohingya youth riding a motorcycle without wearing a helmet in the Kempas area, Johor Bahru recently.....
