KUCHING, Jan 3 (Bernama) -- The Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) will continue the sale of Anak Sekolah rambutans at Medan Niaga Satok, here, this weekend.
FAMA Sarawak deputy director (Operations) Abdul Jaafar Lian said about five tonnes of the Anak Sekolah from Sri Aman, also known as the R191 variety, would be sold this weekend at a cheaper price compared to the market price of between RM8 and RM9 per kilogramme.
"We aim to educate consumers who usually buy rambutans that are reddish and over ripe (Index 6). Anak Sekolah rambutan variant has six indexes. Index 6 rambutans are suitable for consumption, while 3 and 4 are suitable for export," he told Bernama today.
Longhouse residents of Rumah Helary Nyelam, Rumah Nimong Empelanjau and Rumah Sepitson in Sri Aman which are located about 200 kilometres from Kuching cultivate Anak Sekolah rambutans.
With the aid of FAMA, the residents have been able to cultivate the rambutan variant which had started to bear fruits since 2008 and have currently secured a high demand in the domestic and export market.
