DHAKA, Feb 13 (Bernama) -- Four transport workers have been sentenced to death by a court in central Bangladesh for the gang rape and murder of a law student in a moving bus, China's Xinhua news agency reported.

Acting judge of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Tangail district, some 97 km away from Dhaka, delivered the verdict on Monday.

The court also sentenced the supervisor of the bus company to seven years imprisonment and imposed a fine of 100,00 takas (about US$1,204).

Crowds of onlookers outside the packed courtroom reportedly burst into applause after Judge Abul Mansur Ahmed announced the sentence on the four transport workers.

Law student Sultana Rupa was gang raped and murdered on Aug 25 last year. The incident sparked widespread anger in Bangladesh.
