SEPANG, Sept 13 (Bernama) -- The Philippine ASEAN Para Games (APG) contingent are determined to achieve a better gold medal haul in the ninth edition of the biennial Games for disabled athletes, than their compatriots had in last month's SEA Games.

The contingent, powered by 111 athletes have set a target of 27 gold medals, three more than what their able-bodied athletes won in the SEA Games, the latter's worst performance since the 1999 Brunei SEA Games.

According to its deputy chef de mission Dennis Esta, their main medal hopes for the biggest contingent out of the country, would be in athletics and chess with a target of seven gold in each, besides powerlifting, tenpin bowling and table tennis.

"In Singapore two years ago, we finished in seventh place with 16 gold, but this time we want to have a better showing as the government has supported the training for a whole-year duration.

"I think we can achieve it because we have a higher number of athletes participating in more sports, which are 12 out of 16 sports for competition at the Games ," he told reporters during the contingent's arrival at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), here, today.....
