Need To Raise Awareness Of OSH Related Issues At Schools - NUTP

Last update: 14/02/2018

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 14 (Bernama) -- The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) urged the Ministry of Education to look into schools' Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Programme manual holistically to ensure that schools are safe for students, teachers and other staff.

NUTP secretary-general Harry Tan Huat Hock said safety in several locations including laboratories, workshops, school fields, classrooms, canteens and hostels besides wiring and electrical equipment should be emphasised as teachers do not have the skills or instructions to repair these equipment.

"In this regard, the NUTP wants all parties to raise awareness based on the OSH Programme Handbook at Schools in Section 15, 16, 17 or 18, of the OSH Act 1994," he said in a statement, here today.

Deputy Education Minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan said grass-cutting works should not be carried out during school hours, especially when students are using the school field.

Commenting further, Tan said Kamalanathan's advice was to avoid untoward incidents from recurring in the future.

He was commenting on the death of Form Two student Nur Afini Roslan, in Gemas, Negeri Sembilan who died when a flying blade from a grass mower tractor struck her head yesterday while she was at the school field.
