Customs Seizes Contraband Ciggies, Alcohol Worth RM3.1 Mln

PETALING JAYA, Feb 9 (Bernama) -- The Kuala Lumpur Customs Department thwarted attempts to sell contraband cigarettes and liquor worth about RM3.1 million, including unpaid taxes last Monday when it seized the items from a warehouse each in Klang and Shah Alam.

Its director, Zulkurnain Mohamed Yusuf said the contraband, believed to have been brought from a neighbouring country, was meant to be sold in the local market in conjunction with the coming Chinese New Year.

He said in the first raid, the department seized 50,922 litres of beer and 10,050 cartons of white cigarettes at a warehouse in Jalan Ikan Bawal, Klang.

"Two men and two women, aged between 21 and 51, were detained to facilitate investigations," he told a media conference here today.

Subsequently, Zulkurnain said the department raided another warehouse in Section U5, Shah Alam and seized 2,797 cartons of cigarettes. A 39-year-old man was detained in connection with the seizure.....
