Delhi Diary: Farmer Distress Grows In Key Indian States

NEW DELHI (Bernama) -- Farmer distress is growing in some of India's major states, leading to protests, violence and suicides.

In the western state of Maharashtra, farmers this month blocked roads and threw away tonnes of vegetables and milk to highlight their problems.

Discontent in rural communities reliant on farming income is also evident in north Indian states of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. Madhya Pradesh in central India has witnessed many farmer suicides recently and at least six people died as a result of police firing during a demonstration a few days ago.....
