Saudi Arabia Reports No MERS Cases Among Umrah Performers

RIYADH, July 16 (Bernama) -- Saudi Arabia has confirmed no cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus were reported among 6.3 million Umrah performers this season.

Minister of Hajj, Dr Bander Al Hajar attributed this to intensified health measures for Umrah performers whose number has increased by one million compared to last season in 2013, Xinhua news agency reports quoting Okaz newspaper.

Saudi Arabia has been witnessing a decline in MERS cases due to the end of the flu season and a nationwide campaign on the virus.

Health Minister Adel Fakieh said no new cases were registered over the past few days with an overall decline of new patients in the country.

A total of 721 MERS cases have been reported in Saudi Arabia since the first case emerged in 2012, with 295 deaths and 37 patients under treatment at present.
