UAE Becomes Vietnam's Fifth Largest Export Market

HANOI, July 14 (Bernama) -- The United Arab Emirates has surpassed Germany and Hong Kong to become Vietnam's fifth largest export market.

The UAE trails behind the U.S., China, Japan and South Korea, Emirates News Agency (WAM) reports quoting Vietnamese media.

Vietnamnet.vn cited data from Vietnam Customs as showing total exports to the UAE in the first five months of 2014 reached US$2.03 billion, a 27 percent rise year-on-year.

Total export turnover to the UAE is forecast to reach US$2.4 billion in the first half of the year, a year-on-year increase of 25 percent.

Main exports to the country include mobile handsets, computers, electronic products, pepper, textiles and footwear.

Some items saw a sharp decrease such as tea (down 50 percent) and paper (down 32 percent).

Handbags, suitcases, hats and umbrellas recorded the highest export turnover growth rate of 305 percent from January to May.

These were followed by machinery and equipment (up 169 percent), vegetables (up 116 percent), vehicles and spare parts (up 97 percent), rice, garments and textiles (up 91 percent), and computers, electronic products and components (up 80 percent).
