North Korea Proposes Talks With South On Asian Games

PYONGYANG, July 10 (Bernama) -- North Korea has proposed to hold working-level talks with Seoul over the former's participation in the 17th Asian Games scheduled in South Korea's Incheon city from Sept 19 to Oct 4.

North Korea suggested the talks be held on either the northern or southern side of Panmunjom around July 15, Xinhua news agency quoted the official KCNA news agency saying on Thursday.

The country's Olympic Committee has sent a notice to the Asian Games' organising committee reaffirming its decision to send a delegation and a cheering squad to the games.

North Korea's government said its participation in the games would improve inter-Korean relations and contribute to national unity as stated in a statement issued Monday in which it called for ending north-south confrontation.

The statement, released a day before the 20th anniversary of the death of former top leader Kim Il-sung, clarified Pyongyang's stances on easing tensions on the peninsula and achieving "independent reunification" of the nation.
