River Banks Burst As Tropical Depression Brings Heavy Rain To Fiji
People living in low lying areas were urged to move to higher grounds as affected families were moved to evacuation centres, Xinhua news agency reported.
The government advised residents in flood-prone areas to be prepared to evacuate before any flooding occurs, and urged the public to keep up to date with information on closure of roads and availability of transport.
Weather authorities said many areas in the central division where capital Suva is located were also affected.
Major flooding is expected in some areas in central and eastern divisions Thursday night as heavy rain is forecast to continue in the next 24 hours.
The Fiji Meteorological Service said the centre of the slow moving tropical depression was located 160 km north-northeast of Suva at 3 p.m. Thursday, and associated active cloud and rain bands continued to affect most parts of the country.
No casualties or injuries were immediately reported.
