Parrot Leads Police To Owner's Killer In North India
Neelam Sharma, wife of a local Hindi newspaper editor, was found dead at her residence in Balkeshwar colony in the city in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Feb 20 last week.
The woman's husband Veejay noticed a change in their pet parrot's behaviour whenever his nephew, Ashutosh Sharma Goswami, visited their house.
"The parrot sulked every time Ashutosh passed its cage," Sharma's brother Ajay said.
Growing suspicious, the victim's family brought up names of possible suspects in front of the parrot.
When Ashutosh's name was mentioned, the parrot started shouting 'Usne maara, Usne maara' (He has killed), Ajay said.
The family later informed the police who took Ashutosh into custody. On questioning, Ashutosh confessed to the crime.
Ashutosh told police that both he and his accomplice Ronny Massey had entered the woman's house and forced her to hand over cash and valuables at the point of a dagger.
To protect his identity, Ashutosh was believed to have stabbed Neelam and her pet dog to death.
Both men were arrested on Tuesday and charged with murder and robbery, Agra senior superintendent of police Shalabh Mathur said.
"We got a lot of help from the parrot to zero in on the murderer," he said.
