Namibia Reports Increase In Cancer Cases
Dr Peggy Emvula, radiation oncologist the Windhoek Central Hospital's?Dr AB May Cancer Care Centre, said Wednesday this rate was alarming for a population of 2.1 million people.
Breast cancer ranks the highest in females in Namibia followed by cervical cancer.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in Namibian males.
"Not all cancer cases were reported as some patients sought treatment too late," said Emvula.
Estimates from the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2012 showed that 632,000 women aged 15 and older in Namibia were at risk of developing cervical cancer.
About 117 of the women were diagnosed with cervical cancer every year with 63 succumbing to the disease.
The most common cancers in Namibia are skin cancer followed by Kaposi Sarcoma (a type of skin cancer), breast cancer, prostate cancer and cervical cancer.
Emvula said the Cancer Care Centre is faced with challenges of poor treatment outcomes for patients, lack of knowledge about reproductive cancers at community level and stigma associated with having cancer.
Other challenges include non-availability of cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination in public health facilities, and lack of holistic cancer control programmes at all levels.
