Cambodian Prince Ranariddh To Form New Royal Party
Ranariddh's cabinet chief Noranarith Anandayath said Wednesday the 70-year-old son of late King Norodom Sihanouk has planned to form a new party sometime this year and call it 'The Community of Royalist People Party'.
Media reports on Tuesday quoted the prince as saying the country needs a new party as the two current leading parties -- ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) and opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) -- were yet to resolve their political differences.
"I would like to tap my father's political legacy and breathe new life into the royalists; I want to mobilise nationalism and Sihanoukism to form my party and restore the royal family," the prince said.
Prince Ranariddh is currently president of the Supreme Privy Advisory Council to current King Norodom Sihamoni, and was former co-prime minister and ex-president of the National Assembly of Cambodia.
The prince declared to quit politics for the first time in October 2008 after receiving a royal pardon for fraud charges.
He re-entered politics in December 2010 before quitting again in August 2012 due to internal rifts within his Norodom Ranariddh Party.
