Venezuelan Situation Could Delay Mercosur Summit, Says Paraguayan FM
He said that there are permanent contacts between members countries to try and avoid another scenario.
"Venezuela holds the pro tempore presidency of Mercosur and thus is host of the summit. We hope they find as soon as possible a way back to normality, through dialogue. Dialogue is the only lubricant possible for any democracy", said Loizaga who was asked about the current situation in Venezuela during an official ceremony to honor the French ambassador.
"But, I insist and please underline it, we want to hold the Mercosur summit in Venezuela, in March as programmed" underlined Loizaga.
On Sunday Paraguay president Horacio Cartes said that the landlocked country stands by the Mercosur statement on the Venezuelan situation. "Going further than that would mean interfering in the internal affairs of the country".
"It has become the everyday issue; remember that not so long ago we were arguing in favor of no interference in our internal affairs, and now some have been asking for such an option or at least a stronger attitude. I believe that we all have to ask God that dialogue prevails and that people can express themselves", said Cartes.
"Seeing all that violence, the students in the streets, people killed, injured, it is painful so let's hope they can work out a quick way out through dialogue, sooner than later; we abhor violence, we condemn violence", he added.
