More Than 3,000 Participants Join Baton Run In Laos

KUALA LUMPUR, March 18 (Bernama) -- More than 3,000 runners comprising locals, public figures as well as athletes took part in the 'Rising Together Baton Run' at three destinations in Laos this morning.

The run at Vientianne featured the flags of the 11 Southeast Asian countries and the flag of 2017 Kuala Lumpur Games, along historical sites such Patuxay and King Fa Ngum Monument.

Youth and Sports Deputy Minister Datuk M. Saravanan said the celebration of Laotians highlighted the focus on Kuala Lumpur as host of the SEA Games on Aug 19-31.

In a statement issued in the Kuala Lumpur 2017 website here Saturday, he congratulated the education and sports ministries of Laos, as well as the Laos National Olympic Council on the success of the event, which involved local residents.

In the morning run, Saravanan symbolically handed over the baton to Laos Education and Youth Minister, Sengdeuane Lachanthaboune at a gold Buddhist temple known as That Luang atau Great Stupa.

Later, Saravanan, Sengdeuane as well as other public figures began the run from That Luang towards the first destination, Patuxay or Victory Gate, a war memorial built in the 1960's, as a symbol of Laos' independence.
