Hafifi Rues Amirul's Absence In Glasgow

KUALA LUMPUR, July 10 (Bernama) - New Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Mohd Hafifi Mansor rues the absence of Amirul Hamizan Ibrahim from Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

"I will do my best to deliver the gold medal. Amirul's absence has put the focus on me. It was different in New Delhi as Amirul was the senior and focus was on him," he told reporters, here Thursday.

Hafifi however said that he was not pressured by the gold medal target set by the Malaysian Weightlifting Federation (MWF).

He was confident of beating rivals from India, Cameroon and Nigeria and winning the men's 69kg gold medal.

The confidence was due to Indonesian coach Lukman who implemented a training method that is different from Hafifi's training over the past 12 years.

"I learn a lot of new things about weightlifting from coach Lukman. Since training under him, I managed to lift another 15kg.

"He's a good and tough coach. I believe that he can help me to win medals," he said about Lukman, the former Indonesian Olympic team coach.

Hafifi who has been training in Balikpapan, Indonesia for more than five months said he would not disappoint MWF and the National Sports Council (NSC).

The national weightlifting squad is currently undergoing final stage of training at the NSC in Bukit Jalil.

The squad: Men - Mohd Faizal Baharom (56 kg), Zulhelmi Md Pisol (56 kg), Constantine Clement (62 kg), Mohd Hafifi Mansor (69kg), Mohd Azril Huzairi Ramli (69 kg), Abd Mubin Rahim, Loro Wellkinson Peuji (77 kg) and Mohd Faiz Musa (94 kg).

Women - Sharifah Inani Najwa Syed Anuar (48 kg), Azizah Fadzil (53 kg), Frenceay Titus (53 kg) and Nurjannah Batrisyah Abdullah (75 kg).

The best achievement by the weightlifting squad was in New Delhi with two gold medals via Amirul Hamizan Ibrahim (56 kg) and Aricco Jumitih (62 kg).
