Quintero Wins Ltdl Stage One Amidst Blistering Weather Conditions
LANGKAWI, Feb 27 (Bernama) -- The blazing heat along the 101.1km stretch from Resort World Langkawi to Pantai Cenang did not deter Colombia's Duber Quintero of Team Colombia to claim his maiden Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) stage win, here Thursday.
The 23-year-old clocked two hours, 21 minutes and 40 seconds to finish ahead of Australia's Jonathan Clarke (UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling) and Ireland's Matt Brammeier (Synergy Baku Cycling Project).
"I'm not a fast rider that's why I did a breakaway and attacked the front runner. Fortunately, I managed to control my pace and secure a good result today," said Quintero, who turned professional two years ago, in a press conference here today.
Beside winning the first stage, he also took charge of the Blue Jersey (Sprints Competition) after accumulating 30 points.
Quintero's team topped the leader board in the team general classification with a total time of 7'07:36s while team OCBC Singapore led the Asian team classification with 7'07:51s.
Meanwhile, Singaporean Goh Choon Huat emerged as the best Asian rider with a time of 2'21:54s and claimed the White Jersey.
In the mountains competition, Brammeier collected 20 points to claim the Red Jersey.
Tomorrow, the 123 riders will continue with Stage two from Sungai Petani to Taiping (132.5km) that favours the sprinters with three sprint zones at Kuala Ketil, Merbau Pulas and Selama.
