MB Wants Local Authorities, MCMC To Act Tough Against Cable Thieves

IPOH, Sept 3 (Bernama) - Local authorities and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) have been urged to act tough against cable thieves.

Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the stealing of cables from telecommunications towers had disrupted telecommunication services in the state.

"Cable theft and vandalism of telecommunications infrastructure have disrupted telecommunications systems and broadband internet services.

"In fact, it can affect government efforts to increase the rate of internet penetration and affect businesses," he told reporters after chairing the State Exco meeting here, Wednesday.

The state government has directed the authorities to increase control in the affected areas and charge those responsible for stealing cables in court.

"Police have started a big operation to arrest the thieves as their action is seen as an attempt to sabotage the state government."

Zambry said the state government has included the rampant problem in the State Security Council's agenda to ensure it is taken seriously and curbed.

It also ordered Village Development and Security Committees (JKKK) to tighten security around telecommunication centres.
