Woman On Death Row Gets To Meet Mother At TV Station

KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 (Bernama) -- A mother's longing to see and hug her eldest daughter, who is a death row prisoner, was fulfilled today by TV3 through its Wanita Hari Ini (WHI) programme.

The prisoner, only known as Sofia, 28, was brought to the television station for a special interview and then met with her mother through WHI's 'Message From Prison' segment.

The meeting was a history for the broadcast industry, as well as the Prisons Department, as it was the first time that a prisoner on a death row appeared live on a television programme.

Sofia, the oldest of three siblings, was in prison since four years ago and sentenced to death last year for the murder of a family member.

Yet, she is still hoping for a miracle that the death sentence is just a dream. "Honestly, I am not ready for this sentence, but what can I do. I hope it is just a dream, but I know it is reality. I have to accept and always pray.

"When in prison, we are cut off from the outside world, including family members," she said.

As for her mother, the past two years without her beloved daughter around was too much for her to bear that she had stopped making "ketupat" and "rendang" which is Sofia's favourite dish.

"But, God willing, I am going to make ketupat and rendang this raya now that I have met her," she said after the meeting with Sofia.

Sofia still has three more avenues for appeal against the sentence.

Also present was Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
