Boat Skippers Upgrade Boat's Performance To Evade Capture

JOHOR BAHARU, July 17 (Bernama) -- Boat skippers who smuggle illegal immigrants out of the country are upgrading the performance of their boats following tighter enforcement by the authorities.

This was detected by the Region Two Marine Operations Force (MOF) following the detention of a long boat (bot pancung) carrying 114 Indonesian illegal immigrants, including two skippers, while it was attempting to sneak out of the country illegally in the Desaru Waters, Kota Tinggi at about 2am this morning.

MOF Region Two deputy commander, Supt N. Kalai Chelvan said the boat was equipped with five outboard engines, unlike the usual boats which had three or four engines only.

The two skippers who were detained were Indonesian nationals who were on the police wanted list for a long time for active involvement in smuggling activities for the past year.

"Our inspection revealed that the boat was using five outboard engines and it was believed that the illegal immigrants were on their way home to Indonesia," he said at a press conference, here Thursday.
