Legal Action Should Be Taken Against Khalid Samad - Mubarak

SHAH ALAM, July 17 (Bernama) -- The Selangor Council of Former Elected Representatives (Mubarak) today said legal action should be taken against Shah Alam Member of Parliament (MP) Khalid Abdul Samad for being insolent to the Sultan of Selangor.

Its deputy president, Datuk Zainal Dahalan, said the action should be taken as the MP had committed a very serious offence, that is to challenge the status of the Sultan as the Head of Islamic Religion in the state.

"He (Khalid) has not only challenged the executive powers of the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) and Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS), but has actually challenged the monarchy institution," he told a press conference here Thursday.

Last Tuesday, Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, expressed regret and sadness at the PAS MP for questioning the executive powers of MAIS besides suggesting that the powers of the council be abolished.

The Sultan pointed out that Khalid, who was not born in Selangor, should equip himself by understanding the history and learning the laws in Selangor, especially the Selangor State Constitution and the Selangor Islamic Religious Administration Enactment.

His Highness also rebuked Khalid, whom he described as being ignorant of the role of MAIS which was created by the Selangor State Constitution as the advisor and helping the Ruler to discharge his power as the Head of Islamic Religion in the state.

Zainal said as an MP, Khalid should have made suggestions or comments through the right and proper channel to prevent confusion among the people.

Therefore, Zainal said voters in Shah Alam should be more careful in selecting their representative in the next general election.

"Mubarak also calls on Selangor PAS and the party central leadership to make a stand on this issue in line with its principles to uphold and protect the status, sovereignty and holiness of Islam," he added.
