Petronas Contributes RM100,000 To 100 Single Mothers In Terengganu

KEMAMAN, July 17 (Bernama) -- Petronas has allocated RM100,000 for 100 single mothers in Kemasik and Paka in Terengganu this year under the Sentuhan Kasih Ramadan 2014 programme.

Petronas East Coast Region Office general manager, Wan Mohd Hasnan Abdullah said RM500,000 from the company would be given in cash (duit raya) and hampers, while another RM500,000 contributed by Petronas employees would be used to buy clothes for the selected families.

"We allocated RM1,000 for each family, of which RM500 would be given in cash while our staff will take the single mothers and their children to buy Raya clothes with the rest of the money.

"After the shopping trip we will fete them in a breaking of fast function and give them the cash," he told reporters during the Sentuhan Kasih Ramadan 2014 programme at Kampung Labohan Kerteh Mosque yesterday, which was also attended by state assembly Speaker Datuk Zubir Embong.

He said the programme, carried out since 2005, aimed to lessen the burden of single mothers as well as foster closer ties between Petronas staff and the local community.

A recipient, Norizan Mustaffa, 50, from Kampung Gelugor, Kerteh, said she was grateful to Petronas for extending help in preparing for Aidilfitri.

"Petronas has given a lot, clothes for me and the children, money and also cakes and cookies, so I don't have to buy new clothes.

"I lost my husband last September, so Hari Raya this year seems incomplete, especially since I'm also unemployed. The contribution from Petronas is a relief as I don't need to worry about preparations," said the mother of three school-going children.

Single mother Aliati Sidek, 39, said the contribution was meaningful and a great help to the family.

"With this, I need not think about new clothes for myself and my children or about cakes and cookies," said the woman who earns RM900 a month as a cleaner at the Petronas Carigali office in Kemasik.

In conjunction with the programme, 65 single mothers from Kemasik and their families were feted, while 35 other families in Paka will be treated on July 19.
