Volunteers Distribute Food To Vagrants

IPOH, July 17 (Bernama) -- Thirty volunteers from the Perak Barisan Nasional (BN) Youth, the Department of Civil Defence and NGO Yayasan Bina Upaya distributed food early today to vagrants in several places in this city.

They provided the food to the vagrants, many of whom were single people, under the 'Sahur Bersama Gelandangan' programme.

Perak Umno Youth chief Hairul Anwar Mohamed Noor said the movement would propose to the state government to allocate an area for vagrants to gather for easier distribution of food.

Volunteer Zeti Suhaila Mustapha Kamal said she had been engaged in such voluntary work since 2011 as she believed it was her social responsibility as a Malaysian.

"Each of us volunteers will fork out between RM5 and RM10 to buy the food to be distributed to the vagrants," she said.

A vagrant from Alor Setar said he had to beg for a living because his family shunned him after he had served a 12-year prison sentence for a drug-related offence.
