Dr Johari Mat Takes Oath As Senator For Second Term

KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 (Bernama) -- Former Sultan Ismail Petra Islamic College (Kias) chief executive, Datuk Dr Johari Mat, took the oath as senator for the second term at the Dewan Negara Monday.

Johari, 62, who is also a member of the PAS Syura Ulama Council, took the oath before Speaker Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang to serve for another three years.

He was first appointed Dewan Negara member on July 7, 2011, representing Kelantan.

On his appointment, the Doctorate in Usuluddin holder from the Iman Mohd Ibn Saud Al-Islamiyyah University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (1982-1990) promised to give full commitment, regardless of his political party.

"I am thankful and touched to have been entrusted again by the Kelantan State Assembly. I will strive to uphold the race and religion so that Malaysia is looked upon by other Muslim countries," he said when met by reporters.

Johari, who was Kias chief executive for nine years from May 2003 to May 2012, was also associate professor at the Universiti Malaya Academy of Islamic Studies in Kelantan (2001-2003).

He has also carried out several researches, including 'Study on Deviant Teaching in the South, namely Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor (1998), as well as 'Study on Deviant Teaching in the North', namely Perlis, Kedah and Penang (1999).
