Consumers Need To Be Aware Of Their Rights - Hasan Malek

KUALA PILAH, July 13 (Bernama) -- Consumers are advised to be smart when shopping, especially during the fasting month and in preparation for the Aidilfitri celebrations, at the end of this month.

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hasan Malek said as consumers, people have the power to determine the price.

"If power is fully utilised by the consumers then the traders will be more careful in determining the price of their products," he told reporters when met before breaking fast at the Kariah Kampung Tengkek Mosque in Batu Kikir near here, Sunday.

Hasan Malek who is also the member of parliament for Kuala Pilah, said the lack of awareness on the part of consumers, of their rights, has resulted in many being suppressed by traders who like to take advantage.

He said the price reduction campaign which is ongoing now actually benefited everyone, right from consumers to supermarket owners.

On reports about traders selling stale food at Ramadan bazaars, he said action would be taken against them if such traders continue to be careless.

He added that they were working with the Department of Health to detect such cases.
