More Areas Register Moderate Air At Noon

KUALA LUMPUR, July 13 (Bernama) -- The number of areas which recorded moderate reading of the Air Pollutant Index (API) increased to 14 as at noon today, from 10 areas in the morning.

According to the Department of Environment's (DOE) portal, the four new areas are Nilai, with API reading at 58; Kg Air Putih, Taiping (53); Perai (51) and Batu Muda (59).

The areas which registered moderate air since morning are Alor Setar, Bakar Arang, Jalan Tasek, Seberang Jaya 2, Kuala Selangor, Port Klang, Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, Kemaman and Cheras.

An API reading of between zero and 50 indicates good air quality; between 51 and 100, moderate; between 101 and 200, unhealthy; between 201 and 300, very unhealthy and over 301, hazardous.

Members of the public can refer to the DOE portal at to find out the API reading for their areas.

Meanwhile, Natural Resources and Environment Ministry, in a statement today, said the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellite images still detected hotspots in eight locations in the country until yesterday.

Four of the hotspots were detected in Pahang and one hotspot each in Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, Sarawak and Terengganu.

It also said 12 hotspots were detected in Sumatera, Indonesia.

On open burning, the DOE had detected 4,371 cases this year, with most of them in agriculture areas, totalling 1,433 cases, followed by undergrowth (1,003 cases) and forest area (897 cases).

Open burning was also detected at construction site (132 cases), rubbish dumping site (69 cases), industrial areas (34 cases) and small fires (803 cases).
